A Few More of The Best Vegetable Gardening Tips

Probably the best tip for vegetable gardening is the one for choosing a location for your veggie patch, ideally it should have 6-8 hours of sunlight per day, be out of the wind and the soil should have good drainage. Your location might make it impossible to have the perfect spot, but outside of creating more sunlight you can always create a wind break or engineer the garden for better drainage, taking some time to think about and plan your garden lays the foundation for success and a bumper crop each year.

Quality of soil is very important, if it is sandy add some humus and compost to increase the quality, add gypsum to clay based soil for a similar effect, if you have to you can buy some good topsoil to add to your own. You can always try your neighbors, if they have decent soil they may spare a few wheelbarrow loads for you.

Seeds are the foundation of your garden, always use top quality seeds and try to use heirloom seeds if you can and after each planting save some seeds for next year. keep the old seed packets and put your harvested seeds in them, you will always then have planting instructions handy. Use old toilet rolls or egg cartons to raise your seeds, the toilet rolls provide a good wind break and prevent the bugs getting to your seedlings when they are the most vulnerable, as the plants grow they will break down into the soil. You can also buy commercial seed raising pots if you wish.

When planting, put the short plants closest to the sunlight and the tallest at the back of your garden so the short plants don't eventually have their sun obscured by the tall plants. You can also plant short growing cycle plants like lettuce in the rows between slower growing plants to maximize the space in your garden and get the most out of it.

Plant flowers like daisies and marigolds in with your vegetables to help with organic pest control, they also look great too! have plenty of mulch on the garden to keep the moisture in and it can also keep some weeds down. Pull the weeds in your garden by hand or with a hoe, if you put them in a covered bucket of water for a week, strain and add an equal part of fresh water you have a great organic fertilizer for your garden. You can also use boiling water or vinegar in a spray bottle, but remember, vinegar will also kill your vegetable plants so use cautiously.

Try companion planting to not only keep pests away bit to also maximize growth of plants, care needs to be taken when companion planting as some plants don't like to grow near each other. Herbs also make great companion plants and work very well together with your vegetables if planted correctly.
