10 Landscaping tips for Saint Petersburg homeowners
Whenever you are thinking of spiffing up your grounds here in Saint Petersburg, you will want to make a landscaping plan that works well with the Sunshine State climate. At the same time, you want a plan to be economical purchasing plants, supplies, and tools. In addition, you need a plan to be cost-effective from energy and irrigating viewpoint.
Do not forget there is certain areas close to St. Petersburg (and elsewhere in the Deep South) that is often under once-a-week watering restrictions that have been imposed due to drought. Here are 10 useful tips to save you money while thinking and following through your landscaping plan.
Tips #1 - Only buy those plants that are climate-friendly.? Do not purchase plant flowers, grasses, and shrubs that are not native to the area. Plants that flourish in Florida?s weather will obviously save you time and money when it comes to fertilizing and watering.
Tip #2 - Get information from the Department of Agriculture at your local college. Answers to your questions, demonstrations, informative materials, and other resources are generally accessible there.
Tip #3 - consider web sites for collecting data. There are a number of sites that target landscaping that is unique to our area. You can do an advanced search by the region you?re in to get all kinds of selective information that will help you out.
Tip #4 - Trade plant clippings with your friends and neighbors. This will save you money on buying plants and seeds. Also, if you get experienced enough, you may even be able to pull seeds off of existing growth and save them for next year?s plan.
Tip #5 - Save money on your electric bill by planting shrubs around your air conditioning unit. Border that compressor with plants and shrubs high enough to shade the device. Avoid asphalt, cement, and rock on the south and west side of the house so there isn?t as much heat build-up within your home.
Tip #6 - Grow vines on trellises. This can shade off one full side of your home if you do it correctly. Fences and trees can have a similar effect as well.
Tip #7 - Use those trees to bring down your summertime electricity bill. Only three trees that strategically shade the south and west sides of your house will save on your utility bill up to $ 250 per year.
Tip #8 - Use your head when watering your garden areas and lawn. The best times of the day to water is when it's cool to avoid evaporation before the lawn and soil have had a chance to take advantage of it.
Tip #9 - once again, use your head while you use your garden hose. Brush off the drive and sidewalk rather than wasting water spraying it off. Pistol-type nozzles are best because they close off mechanically and do not waste water. Keep water tap* shut off as well.
Tip #10 - begin your own compost heap. You can start one of these with an old trashcan or on a little spot of land that is exposed to rainfall and sunlight.
