Organic Farming in Mizoram
Organic farming in Mizoram
The state of Mizoram, located in the North East of India possesses the characteristic of inaccessibility due to altitude and terrain and fragility because of steep slope and other biophysical condition, however, it is very rich in biodiversity, ethnicity and social setup. Mizoram being declared an Organic State is all ready to follow a well guided systematic approach towards an uniform development in Organic Farming. This transition into an Organic State has already been realized since many years ago, as the cultivators follow time-tested Indigenous Farming System with the use of indigenous technical knowledge in Agriculture and allied sector. The Fertilizer and pesticide consumption in Mizoram may be considered to be one of the least among all the states in the country. Thus, it is essentially organic in nature. This is because the synthetic agrochemicals are used only in some areas/pockets which is less than 25% while in other areas of about 75% especially under shifting cultivation synthetic agro-chemical inputs is not used at all. The region could be placed on the world organic map by institutionalizing production, certification and marketing of the organic produce.
In the year 1994, the Department of Agriculture had started implementation of Organic Farming Programme making every effort to create awareness and convince the farmers to take up Organic Farming. Great efforts have been made to popularize organic farming through extension activities. In 1996 demonstration on efficacy of Organic Farming was carried out in the farmers plot in Lungmuat, situated 60 Km from Aizawl, the capital city, which practices Organic Farming till date. The Biofertilizer Production Unit and Bio Control Laboratory was established at Neihbawi, Agriculture Departmental Farm. As large scale use of fertilizers and pesticides pose a number of environmental hazards and imbalances in soil nutrient level, organic farming has been highly encouraged. The uses of Farmyard manure,
compost, bio-fertilizer, bio pesticides, etc. are used instead of synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides etc. Crop rotation, growing of green manureing crops viz. Dhaincha, Sunhemp, etc. and different cultural practices are followed.
The changing mind set of the population toward healthy food and the policies of the Government of India, to increase food grain export could only be met through the intervention on Organic Food Production. The awareness among the general masses and intellectuals of the hazardous effect of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides has paid dividend. There is growing demand for organic food with the consumer becoming more concerned about the food quality and health.
The Mizoram Organic Bill, 2004 was introduced in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly by the Hon.ble Minister for Agriculture, etc. and it was passed unanimously in the legislative Assembly on 12th July, 2004. This Mizoram Organic Bill 2004 was eventually notified in the Mizoram Gazette Vide No.H.12018/135/04-1 JD dt. 21.7.2004. The state has to take advantage of this new development and capitalize on the opportunities offered by the Mizoram Organic Bill 2004. This Bill will help to develop a road map for helping the farming families of the State to make organic farming both a way of life and a mean to sustainable livelihoods. The traditional practice of organic farming which was continued by default has been transformed into scientific organic farming with improved organic design for higher production and productivity.

For the past several years organic foods have received an increase of attention due to the lack of pesticides and not being genetically altered. Many people are demanding that their food be untouched. Recently a SWAT team arrested farmers for selling raw milk to customers. Is it a crime to drink raw milk or does the government feel left out? Mike Adams, health ranger, first broke the story any tells us why the FDA doesn't approve of this. Follow Lauren on Twitter: twitter.com
