Planning For Growing Vegetables Organically

One of the newest trends in gardening is growing vegetables organically.  Whether you are doing this to sustain your family, or just for fun, proper planning is involved in organic gardening.  Growing vegetables organically has many benefits.  You and your family will be healthier, and you will save money.  Since the most important factor to a successful organic garden is preparation, you will need to understand what to do.

The first thing to look at is garden location.  Several key factors to consider when finding your gardening area are:
Make sure that the spot is going to get plenty of sunshine.  Your garden should get at least 6 hours a day.  When planting near the house, the southern side works best
The site should drain well.  Many options are available to improve drainage of a site.  Do not plant on an incline if possible.  Your garden can be ruined by erosion.  Seeds will wash away if it comes a heavy rain right after planting.
Having a water supply nearby is very important.
Sites that have excessive weeds, such as kudzu, should be avoided for growing vegetables organically.
If you have a considerable amount of wildlife in your area, consider fencing off the garden.

Soil testing is the next step.  If you are getting the soil tested, let the testing site know that it is exclusively for organic gardening.  Most local agricultural offices will do this for a small price.  Garden centers are also a good option for getting your soil tested.  Testing your own soil is also an option.  Having it done is recommended if you are just beginning.  You will be provided with a report stating what will have the best yield, as well how to condition the soil.

Next, you will want to condition the soil for growing vegetables organically.  You will need to turn the first 10-12 inches of soil, adding compost as you do.  Compost is a great form of organic matter.  Two options are available for compost: buying or making your own.  Composting will release the natural nutrients of the soil, as well as help the soil retain water.  When you get your report from the testing site, be sure to ask for their recommendations.

Once you have done the above, you will be ready to plant. This is where you can let your creativity and imagination go to work for growing vegetables organically. Since you have properly planned and taken all of the necessary steps to begin, you have created something that you will reap rewards from for many years.
