How to Create an Outdoor Living Room
Spending time in your garden and patio area doesn't have to be just for yard work. Creating an outdoor living room lets you enjoy your time outdoors, giving you an oasis from work, both inside and out. An outdoor living room is also a great way to expand the functional space of your home, and creating one can be an easy and very rewarding experience.
Instructions:
Lay the flooring. A large outdoor rug centered in the space helps define the space as a room and not just a collection of patio furniture. The outdoor rug does not have to be as big as the space you are defining as your room, but it should share similar dimensions.
Add seating. Moving out from the rug, add seating. Wicker patio sets typically come with a sofa, table and one or two chairs, and these matching patio sets work well for families. Mixing a couple lounge chairs with two wooden chairs is also an option that provides a little more versatility for couples. Lounge chairs are more appropriate when you want the focus of the room to be outside the room, like your pool or a beautiful ocean view. Otherwise, try to arrange the chairs facing each other.
Create walls. Just as indoor rooms have walls, so should an outdoor room. Your outdoor walls won't be made of drywall though. You don't need four, or even three, walls. You are just trying to create some privacy and define the room. Plants work well as walls. A decorative screen can also be added to the design.
Add some lighting. When using the room at night, you will want to be able to see. Solar-powered accent lights are easy to install along the edge of a patio and don't require wiring. Metal torches stand up well to the elements and set a romantic mood with their flickering light. Wall-mounted lights provide brighter lighting than torches, which is useful if you prefer to read outside at night.
Add shade. An awning or umbrella not only protects you from the hot sun, but it also helps make the space feel cozier by providing a stand-in roof. They will also give you some more privacy.
Add tables. Tables help make the space more practical as a living area. You don't want to have to set your drink or laptop on the ground every time you get up. Two side tables and a coffee table should be adequate for most people, but if you plan to entertain lots of guests, you might want to have a few more tables or a bistro set.
